A 19-year-old volunteer at Mylor Sailing School has been short-listed for a Cornwall Sports Partnership award.

Ryan Linthwaite has been working three days a week at Mylor Sailability, the charity formed by Mylor Sailing School to make sailing accessible to people of all ages, whatever their disability. The teenager who has cerebral palsy and started sailing at Mylor, is now in charge of a work experience scheme at the charity, specifically for people with learning disabilities.

He currently has two people attending for half a day each week, when, under his guidance, they are involved with setting up the centre, kitting out and helping participants and helping to maintain the boats.

Tracey Boyne, owner of Mylor Sailing School who nominated Ryan, said: “He has shown such great capabilities and is very conscientious and mature. The work experience scheme he is running has been really successful and given a lot of confidence to everyone concerned.”

Ryan is up for the Cornwall Sports Partnership Young Volunteer of the Year Award, which will be announced next Friday, November 4, at a ceremony at the Headland Hotel in Newquay, when all his Mylor Sailing School colleagues will be attending to give him their support.

Mylor Sailing School itself has also just become an awards finalist, in the Access and Inclusivity category of the Cornwall Tourism Awards, where it is up against the Eden Project, the Screech Owl Sanctuary and Kernock Cottages.

The Cornwall Tourism Awards result from a rigorous three-stage judging process that includes mystery shoppers as well as visits from the judges. Successful businesses in these awards will be fast tracked into the South West Tourism Excellence Awards in February 2017 and possibly invited to represent Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the 2016/2017 National VisitEngland Awards.

Tracey said: “We are, of course, delighted. Coincidentally, this awards ceremony takes place in the same venue, the night before the Cornwall Sports Partnership awards, on November 3, so I’m on a double night out.”
