Students from the Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union (FXU) Islamic Society have raised over £1,000 in their first charity week.

The society took part in the thirteenth annual charity week, which sees Islamic societies from all over the world raise money for orphans and needy children. The student group held a week of events across both Penryn and Falmouth campuses, including cake sales, football tournaments (both virtual and physical), a henna stall and film night.

Sajjad Jabarkhel, president of the Islamic Society, said: “Being the furthest and the smallest Islamic Society did not stop us from bringing the international charity week to Cornwall for the first time. We believed it was the right time to introduce our committee members to a new challenge, knowing the generosity of the people on this campus.

"The purpose of charity week was unity and to help those in need, however with such a small society, we were not able to reach our goal, therefore we gave an open invitation to all the clubs and societies to get together and help. Charity week broke many stereotypes and saw many different societies/clubs and volunteers getting together to make a difference. Our goal was to raise £250 by end of the week, however with the help of FXU and our volunteers, we managed to achieve our target on the first day of the event.

"On behalf of the FXU Islamic Society, I would like to thank all the clubs and societies that helped us out during the event. We would like to thank the FXU Cheerleading Squad for putting on an amazing event for us, International Society for their film night, Christian Union and Vegan Society for their part in the cake sale and many more. We have managed to raise over £1,000, which will go towards the building of a paediatric centre in Syria.”
