A team from Harbour Lights is set to embark on a two-day educational study trip to North-East Scotland next week as part of the 2017 National Fish and Chip Awards.

The Falmouth fish restaurant is one of five finalists for the Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year Award, and all the businesses have been invited to take part in the trip, organised by awards sponsor Seafood Scotland.

During the trip, the group will visit the port of Peterhead, Europe’s leading whitefish fishing port, where they will have the opportunity to learn about the supply chain of haddock and cod which feeds the UK's restaurant guests and families at home.

Starting the trip with an early morning visit to the lively fish market, the finalists will have the opportunity to explore the daily routine of Europe’s whitefish capital while also learning about the sustainable fisheries management practices followed by the Scottish fishing fleet – advancing their knowledge of the whole fishing and supply process; from catch to plate.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive at awards organiser Seafish, said: "This trip provides finalists with a valuable opportunity to explore one of the UK’s busiest fishing ports in action. Fish and chip shop owners will travel from across the country to gain insight and knowledge from industry experts, and be able to take these hints and tips back to their businesses.

“I cannot stress enough how inspirational this trip is for everyone involved. It’s important that we encourage people to pursue a career in the fish and chip sector so that the industry can thrive for generations to come, but to do so they must have a strong understanding of the wider seafood industry – and that’s exactly what this trip offers.”
