A free design seminar, focusing on dementia-friendly environments on our high streets and looking at how we can achieve a dementia-friendly community in Falmouth and the surrounding areas, is to be hosted by DanSmith.Design and the Falmouth and Penryn Dementia Action Alliance.

Local businesses are being invited along to the event in March to learn more about how they can become more accessible to people living with dementia.

"In a recent survey by the Alzheimer’s Society only 47 per cent of people living with dementia said that they felt a part of their community; with 23 per cent saying they had to give up shopping and 28 per cent said they had to give up leaving the house altogether," said a spokesman. "With one in 14 people over the age of 65 living with dementia, it is highly likely that you know somebody who’s life has been affected by dementia.

"We want to make Falmouth and surrounding areas accessible to all its residents. We will be discussing dementia-friendly design solutions for public spaces on our high streets. A number of suppliers to the built environment will discuss ways to help your business become dementia-friendly through the design of your premises (including lighting, furniture, interior design and flooring); as well as a number of organisations that can help through information, awareness and services – including the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia Friends Initiative.

"Networking over lunch will be a perfect opportunity to meet with people living with dementia,

their carers and other organisations for further feedback and advice."

The seminar will take place at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth on Thursday, March 30, when doors will open at 9.30am for a 10am start. Refreshments will be provided throughout the morning.

Places are limited, so anyone wishing to attend should email hello@dansmithdesign.co.uk to
