Some of the top chefs in the UK, including a BBC Great British Menu star, are delivering a series of meals in support of charity with the help of catering students in Cornwall and a Falmouth restaurateur.

For 12 weeks, until the end of March, Oliver’s restaurant in Falmouth, which is owned and managed by Ken and Wendy Symons, is playing host to a dozen talented chefs, as they prepare taster menus using the finest local ingredients, donated by well-known suppliers.

Catering and hospitality students from Cornwall College have been invited by Ken to support the events and have been relishing working alongside the talented chefs.

“These are 12 really brilliant chefs who are chalk and cheese in terms of style, which gives the students a great opportunity to see the preparation of really great food in very different ways,” said Ken.

“It gives them a focus and an idea of which direction they want to go in their careers, whether it’s fine dining, hotel service or more casual dining. They’ve been really good and they’ve enjoyed not just being stood around, but actually getting fully involved in the kitchen. Leon McLoughlin, level two catering student, plated nearly every dish last night, which is the whole point, hands on experience, not just being stood there.”

Ken, together with his guest chefs, will be serving up their favourite dishes to food loving enthusiasts, while at the same time raising money for two charities - Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospitality Action.

Phil Oakes, professional cookery tutor at Cornwall College Camborne, has been involved with the event from an early stage. “As a college we are always looking for new experiences to send our students on, as this gives them additional skills in a wide variety of environments, something which will help them throughout their careers," he said. "We look forward to assisting Ken with lots more theme nights in the future.”

There are still tickets available and the talented chefs taking part include: Jude Kereama, Lee Skeet, Chris Wheeler, Guy Owen, Emily Scott, Josh Eggleton, Phil Thomas, Ben Prior, Bruce Rennie, Ernst Van Zyl, Russell Brown and Andrew Dargue.

Ken is also running a raffle, which will be drawn on March 27, with prizes including a stay at the five-star Ampersand Hotel in London, a three course lunch at No 6 Padstow and a champagne tea at the Abbey Hotel in Bath.
