Cornish Charities are to benefit from local Rotarians who are celebrating their 28th year of service to the local and international communities.

Since being chartered in 1989, the Rotary Club of Mount’s Bay has been an integral part of charity fundraising in the Penzance area. This year that tradition is being carried forward, not only with the annual St Michael's Way Walk, a charity golf day and Festival of Remembrance, which will be raising money for both international charities and local causes, but also a sponsored circumnavigation of the Cornish boundary by Rotarians and their supporters.

On January 7, club president, Eric Bilkey, set off from Land's End to fulfil the first leg of the walk. In characteristic Cornish wind and rain he was seen off by various members of the club and, showing great fortitude in battling the weather, completed the first six miles to Penberth.

Club spokesman Claire Waldie said: “Having now been set a sterling example by our president, every week throughout 2017 Rotarians from the club will, consecutively, complete a stretch of the path around Cornwall.

"They will follow the southern coastline, the Tamar Valley and then return to Land's End via the north coast. This will be our flagship event for the year, and through both business and personal sponsorship hope to raise funds for St Petroc's and Cornwall Air Ambulance, - both charities being chosen by the two presidents who will serve the club during 2017, Eric Bilkey and Iain Bevis-Hole – whilst at the same time raising awareness of Rotary throughout Cornwall and the local business community.”

Claire added: “Several Rotarians have expressed a desire to walk their stretch in fancy dress, therefore, please do not be surprised if you should see a large chicken or pantomime dame walking the coastal path.”
