A young boy had to be airlifted to hospital after sustaining head injuries following a collision with a car in Newquay this afternoon.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a young boy, believed to be a student at Newquay Tretherras School, was struck by a Fiat Ducato just before 3.10pm this afternoon.

When police arrived at the scene they found the boy had suffered a head injury and a serious foot injury, but was conscious and breathing.

The boy was then taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth due to the head injuries.

There are currently road closures in place on Henver Road junction, where the incident occurred.

A police spokesperson said: "Police and ambulance were called just after 3.10pm today to a collision between a child and a Fiat Ducato on Henver Road, Newquay.

"The boy has sustained a serious foot injury and a head injury.

"The air ambulance has landed and the boy will be taken to Derriford Hospital. 

"Henver Road has been closed by police."
