Twenty-two local organisations or charities have been given a share of the more than £7,000 that was raised by Falmouth firefighters at their annual firework display last year.

On Saturday representatives from many of the good causes turned up at Falmouth Fire Station for the official presentation ceremony when cheques were handed out. After collecting their donation, the recipients were invited to join firefighters for some light refreshments and were shown around a fire engine and the station.

Firefighter Giles Kent, who organised the event, said: “Every year following the fireworks display we invite local charities and good causes to apply for a donation and it’s a great way to pull the community together."

Watch manager Stuart Williams, who is also secretary of Falmouth Fire Station social club, added: “It’s great that we are able to do this and that the public continue to support the fireworks. We have been doing the display for many years now and whether it is a dry clear night or pouring with rain the public are always there, without whom we would not be in a position to help out local charities and good causes.

"As a fire service we are really keen for members of the public to attend organised events as fire works can be very dangerous, and no matter how careful you are accidents can still happen, by coming along to an organised display you get to see great fireworks and everyone has a great time in a safe, controlled environment.”

This year’s display will once again be held on November 5 at Falmouth Cricket Club where over £7,500 worth of fireworks will once again be set off to music.

The recipients of the share out from last year's display were: Falmouth School, Falmouth Guides, Dementia Friendly Group, Nankersey Male Choir, Mabe School football team, Cornwall Accessible Activities Project, Falmouth Toy Library, Malborough School, Falmouth and Penryn Sea Cadets, Sailability, PANTS, Budock Toddler Group, Tanya's Courage Trust, Active Blind Leisure Enterprises, Falmouth Stroke Club, Penryn Community Craft Group, Penryn and Falmouth Foodbank, Falmouth Methodist Church, Penryn RFC U15s, Swamp Circus, the COPS group and BLUGS (Barncoose Limb User Group).
