Falmouth and Penryn Sea Cadets recently held their annual presentation evening in front of local dignitaries, parents and the commanding officer of RFA Mounts Bay.

Last year the unit, which is based in Commercial Road, Penryn, was awarded another “burgee" for achievement. This was the sixth consecutive year, putting the unit into top 20 per cent nationally.

The inspecting officer was Lieutenant Commander Trevor Brookes RN, the Royal Navy's liaison officer at Falmouth Docks. Following a ceremonial raising of colours, Lt Cdr Brookes, inspected the guard of honour and presented awards to successful cadets in a number of categories and disciplines, all fully recognising the significant achievements of the unit as a whole on a national level.

The evening concluded with a presentation by Petty Officer Cadet Harry Avard, detailing his experiences when he went to sea on the TS Royalist, the new Sea Cadet training ship, and a presentation by senior cadets who gave a resume of the last year's activities of the unit.

The Royal Naval Association Cadet of the Year was named as Able Cadet Michael Alford. This award includes a financial bursary to send Michael to sea for a week.

The CO’s Most Improved Cadet 1st Class was Macsen Osmond, who also got the Chaplain's Community Service Award. Macsen is the Mayor of Penryn’s Cadet. The Seaman of the Year was Petty Officer Cadet, Harry Avard.

RFA Mounts Bay's commanding officer, Captain David Buck, said afterwards: “The achievements of the unit have been remarkable and it has been a most uplifting experience to observe the dedication and enthusiasm of these inspirational young people. They are clearly a credit to the Sea Cadet Corps."
