Colourful characters from the world of children's literature were celebrated by schools in the Helston and Lizard area marking World Book Day last Thursday.

As has become tradition in recent years, Nansloe Academy pulled out all the stops once again to provide a day full of excitement and surprises for the children.

The school’s story garden was transformed into scenes from the books of Oliver Jeffers, best-selling author and illustrator of Catch a Star, Lost and Found, the Incredible Book Eating Boy and The Day the Crayons Quit.

On arrival, all the children and parents entered a magical world through an Antarctic snow storm to find staff in character as penguins, bears, circus performers and even a giant moose.

Throughout the day children took part in a wide range of activities, such as making alien spaceships, mini-catapults and kites – even making edible books.

Millie, in the school’s reception class, described it as "the best day ever."

Headteacher Charles Field thanked the staff for their "dedication and hard work in ensuring another extremely successful World Book Day."

Elsewhere in Helston, St Michael's chose Friday to dress up as various characters from literature, while at Parc Eglos pupils shared their favourite books with each other.

All pupils at Porthleven School dressed as different characters, while staff took inspiration from Where's Wally for their outfits.

Many other schools took part in the event, including at Breage and others on the Lizard Peninsula.

They included Landewednack School and the adjoining Little Lizards Children's Centre, where the day coincided with the reopening of the school's library, in which a book sale was held.

Headteacher Louise Jones said everyone looked fantastic, adding: "World Book Day has coincided brilliantly with the current refurbishment of our school library. Thank you to everyone who came and supported our book sale, we were delighted to raise £117 during the afternoon which will go towards purchasing new books and resources for the children."
