Truro and Penwith College has won the boys' title at the prestigious Team Tennis Schools Senior Students Finals 2017.

The team from Truro and Penwith College is the first to successfully defend the boys' title in the Senior Students category of the Team Tennis Schools competition.

Kieran Trewhella and Charlie Newman, both from Truro, who were part of the winning team in 2016, played alongside two new team members Mark Pearson, from Penryn, and Drew Burnard, from Delabole, to secure the title for a second successive year.

Ryan Fern, team captain and coach at Truro and Penwith College, said: “Our team included two players from last year’s winning team which meant we had a good blend of youth and experience.

"All the boys played brilliantly and supported each other as a team should do which made my job a lot easier. It’s a fantastic event that gives players a chance to proudly represent their college and we’re delighted to be the only team to successfully defend the Boys title and retain the cup.”

Matt Byford, competition manager at the Lawn Tennis Association, added: “The Senior Students competition is an important part of the Team Tennis Schools Series which sees over 1,500 young people aged 16-19 playing Team Tennis. The finals were very successful with all 24 teams who qualified playing some excellent tennis throughout the weekend. Congratulations to Truro and Penwith College who successfully defended the Boys title they won in 2016.”

Team Tennis Schools is free event for all schools and colleges in England, Scotland and Wales and gives players a chance to represent a school or college in a competitive, team environment. Teams in the Senior Students competition progress from League to Knockout Stages and on to the National Finals.
