West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas is encouraging people to dig out their most colourful and outrageous hat on Friday, to help support the fight against the biggest killer for people aged under 40.

The MP for St Ives has asked dozens of local businesses to take part in 'Wear a Hat Day' on March 31 in aid of Brain Tumour Research.

Mr Thomas said: "Despite brain tumours taking such a horrendous toll on our young people, research into understanding and treating brain tumours receives less than one per cent of national cancer research spending in the UK.

“When I visited the Brain Tumour Research Centre at Plymouth University I learned how little is known about brain tumours yet for someone who is diagnosed with a tumour the effect is devastating.

“I hope that on Friday, West Cornwall folk will turn out in their droves to have a bit of hatty fun while demonstrating support for patients and their families and raising funds and awareness for a wonderful cause.”

Several businesses across Cornwall are taking part in the event, including Helston based Roy Doble, Helly’s Tea Room and Gillians Larder.
