The Spring Festival held at St Erth Parish Church over three days last month proved a great success. Locally-grown Cornish daffodils had been used to decorate the church, and there was live music as well as refreshments, crafts and a raffle.

The event was visited by over 600 people and has raised over £3,000 so far. The final proceeds will be divided equally between the Children’s Hospice South West and St Erth Church. A total of 4,000 daffodils of various varieties were donated by the Richards family from Carwin Farm, Connor Downs. Gypsophilia was given by Clowance Wood Nursery; greenery for the arrangements by local growers and a plant display loaned by Trevenna Cross Nursery.

An impressive display of floral art was arranged throughout the church by the ladies from Penzance, Hayle and Camborne Flower Clubs, along with two floral art demonstrators.

Many members of the local community contributed to the event including St Erth School pupils’ parade with their daffodil crowns; St Erth Brownies’ daffodil bunting; a colourful spring craft stall and daffodil-themed pictures specially painted by Hayle Arts Society.

During the afternoons visitors were treated to music played by local groups on a range of instruments (violins, recorders, organ, piano, guitar and hand bells) while enjoying tea and home-made cakes.

Jill Sharpless, who has been involved in fundraising for Children’s Hospice South West for many years, said: “Church warden Barbara Read and I are absolutely delighted that the festival was such an amazing success. It has been a delight for us both to welcome so many friends to enjoy the daffodils with us.

“It will be my pleasure to share the proceeds with St Erth Church, and we would both like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone from the St Erth community and Hayle CHSW Friends group for their outstanding support throughout this event.”
