Two familiar faces have popped up behind the bar of the Three Tuns at St Keverne after taking over as landlords.

Helston Packet reporter Emma Ferguson has joined her husband Matt in the new venture, opening their doors to customers for food and drink on Good Friday.

Matt is well known in the local tourism industry, having most recently been managing the Norway Inn at Perranarworthal. Before that he was assistant manager of the Pandora Inn at Restronguet and has also worked at the Nansloe Manor Hotel in Helston and the Halzephron Inn at Gunwalloe.

Emma, who will continue writing for the Packet in addition to becoming landlady, said: “As soon as we found out the Three Tuns was available we knew this was the pub for us.

“I spent my entire childhood living just down the road at Traboe and was christened in the parish church right next door to the Tuns, my parents were married there and my grandparents are buried there, so it really feels like coming home.

“And having spent many years covering St Keverne Parish Council meetings I’m really keen we should support all the brilliant projects that are happening in the village, which is why we will be choosing one community group or charity in the area to support each year through fundraising and events.”

Matt has equally strong connections with St Keverne, as his mother Paula was born there, the daughter of village mobile butcher Jimmy Wood. One of her lasting memories of there is falling down the church steps from top to bottom at the age of three – ironically, right next to the pub her son is now landlord of.

The kitchen is headed up by Matt’s brother Daniel, who was previously part of the team of chefs at the Norway Inn.

His menu includes Boscarnon Farm Grass Fed Beef from cattle raised on heathland near Coverack, sausages by St Keverne butchers J Retallack & Son, St Keverne Bakery bread for the sandwiches and ice cream from Roskilly's, just down the road

“Using local producers is really important to us,” said Matt, adding: “We want to connect with as many businesses in the area as possible – and that includes working alongside the other pubs in the immediate area, rather than in competition.”

The pub, which has undergone a major refurbishment, has five letting rooms that will be available to book from the start of next month and a weekly rota of events including jam nights, curry nights and Matt’s pub quiz – including his famous ‘taster round.’
