For almost two decades she has committed her time and efforts to improving Helston, but now Judith Haycock is stepping down from council work.

Tributes and thanks were paid to Mrs Haycock when she attended her final meeting of Helston Town Council last Thursday as a representative of the town on Cornwall Council.

She has been the Helston South division member for the last eight years, having initially joined local government as a town council 18 years ago, before going on to become a Kerrier district councillor and finally joining the county council.

Mrs Haycock described the town council as “a different place” to when she joined, with Ronnie Williams being the only councillor still remaining from that time.

“Certainly, in the last four years it’s been really good to work with you and there’s been some really good two-way conversations,” she said.

Helston’s mayor Gillian Geer said Mrs Haycock had been “absolutely fantastic to this town,” while councillor Mike Thomas gave a personal tribute saying: “She has been a great help to me in the past.”

He pointed to the redevelopment of Helston Community College as an example of how Mrs Haycock had “really pushed” to look after the community and made sure the town council was always updated of any developments.

“A very personal thank you for all you have done for us,” he added.

Speaking afterwards, Mrs Haycock said: “It has been a privilege to represent Helston, first on the town, then Kerrier District and for the last eight years on Cornwall Council.

“As a councillor people expect you always to be available; I’ve had phone calls and emails on Christmas Day. I’ve always tried my best to help but unfortunately with the council’s financial cut backs that has become very difficult.

“I will still be taking an active part in many of the town events.”
