May Day celebrations by Helston Town Band will be back to their full glory this year and for future years, taking a full route around the town for their traditional parade.

Following the confusion of last year, when road closures were not applied for in time which meant a reduced route for the band, this year a group of local volunteers have got together to make sure everything is in place.

As a result, this Bank Holiday Monday the band will be out walking the streets of Helston at 7am and again at 7pm, playing the Furry Dance tune.

With this year’s Flora Day being just five days later this year, it gives people the chance to get in some last minute practice or simply get into the spirit of the occasion ready for the following Saturday.

Judith Haycock said: “Years ago far more people joined in the procession lead by Helston Town Band. It is an opportunity to do the Flora Dance or practice ready for the big day but in recent years there has been some confusion, so this year everything is arranged.”

There will be volunteer stewards on the road closures and the route has been planned, with the procession leaving Guildhall at 7am and again exactly 12 hours later.

They will walk along Meneage Street to Meneage House and back, then up Wendron Street, along Penrose Road, Church Street and Cross Street, through Tanyard Lane to Lady Street and then proceed around the Bowling Green and up Coinagehall Street back to the Guildhall.

Everyone is welcome to join them at both times, following on behind or just watching from the pavement.
