Two runners from Hayle have completed the Hope 24 event, which challenges entrants to complete as many five-mile laps around a park as possible within 24 hours.

Mickee Jelf and Naomi Connon entered the race, held in Newnham Park in Plympton.

They began running at around midday on Saturday, and throughout the day they made great proress - until the wet weather arrived.

After four hours of torrential rain the course had turned into a mud bath and the event organisers suspended the race on safety grounds.

At 5am it was deemed safe to continue and so, while other runners were still sleeping, Mickee and Naomi headed back out to keep pushing and increase their number of laps completed.

After a further seven hours the challenge finished, and the duo had completed an amazing 14 laps.

This equated to 70 miles, and Mickee and Naomi were joint third in the ladies category.
