A pledge for a public meeting has been made to discuss traffic issues relating to a road out of Helston.

Mike Thomas, newly elected to represent the Helston North division at Cornwall Council, told a meeting of the town council last week that the Redruth Road, from Turnpike to the Water-ma-Trout industrial estate and beyond, was a topic raised to him while out canvassing ahead of the election earlier this month.

He said speed of traffic on the road was the main concern, but he also heard that some drivers were rude to people simply delivering packages or trying to manoeuvre.

Vehicles were also travelling “incredibly fast” as people tried to cross the road to get to Janes Fish and Chips.

“Although there are courtesy crossings there, drivers tend to ignore them and don’t give people due respect,” said Mr Thomas.

He said he was looking at the possibilities of different traffic calming, or even a dedicated cross further up the road, although he warned it might also be possible that nothing could be done at all, not just because of cost but traffic orders.

However, he said: “I think the residents need some explanations, to find out what can be done and if it can’t explain why.”

Mr Thomas said he has already begun to discuss the issue with the highways department at Cornwall Council, which had agreed to send a representative to a meeting, which he hoped to organise for mid-September.

He is now due to ask for the backing of the town council when it meets next month.
