Voting in the general election is your single best chance of affecting how this country is run for the next five years, and today is your last chance to register.

In 2015, more eligible people didn't vote than voted for any one political party, including the winners, so every vote really does matter.

With today's deadline approaching, the Electoral Commission reports that seven million eligible UK residents have yet to register - and at around 10 per cent of the entire UK population, that could be an influential number of votes.

Currently it is young people who are most likely to lose their voice in the upcoming election, with a third of those under 34 still not having registered to vote.

The voter registration deadline is midnight today, and the process could not be simpler, taking just five minutes at gov.uk/register-to-vote

The election will be held on June 8, but if you are likely to be away you can still make sure your vote matters by applying for a postal or proxy vote - something which could also provide useful for students.
