Cornwall’s largest celebration of geek culture returns for the third time this year, at the start of July.

Celebrating the worlds of comic books, film, television, gaming, cosplay and much more besides, GeekFest 3.0 will take place on Saturday, July 1, and Sunday, July 2, at Heartlands.

This year’s event embraces a Star Wars theme, with a number of related showstoppers, including a refurbished Pod Racer, while Cornwall College students have been busy creating props and decorations to dress the venue with Star Wars inspired work.

To top it all, a replica of the DeLorean from Back to the Future will be time travelling its way to the festival.

There will also be an appearance from actor Clem So, who has appeared in several films, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Guardians of the Galaxy and Skyfall, on the Sunday.

Returning to GeekFest are fan favourites from previous years, including live action role play by Chaosgate, Star Wars costuming group The UK Garrison, as well as 8-Bit Gaming Bar. In addition, there will be epic Nerf battles, archery run by Redruth Archers, obstacle runs and a graffiti workshop run by Seventh Pencil. Keith Sparrow returns with Manga Workshops, and The Have A Go Hero will be on hand to showcase his incredible cosplay skills.

Cosplay has been a very popular feature of previous GeekFests and GeekFest 3.0 promises to continue in this tradition, with cosplay competitions and categories aimed at both children and adults. This year there a couple of additional Star Wars inspired categories: Aren’t you a little short to be a Stormtrooper? for children, as well as a special adult category inspired by Princess Leia - I’d just as soon kiss a Wookie.

There is also a general, unrestricted cosplay category for both children and adults to attend as any chosen character, with prizes for first, second, third and judges’ favourite.

National prop companies, screenwriters, actors and local businesses have contributed a diverse range of items for the first GeekFest Silent Auction. Throughout the weekend, visitors can place sealed bids on the range of items, with the winning bidders announced on the Sunday afternoon, with all proceeds to Children’s Hospice South West.

There will be a wide variety of geek-inspired products and merchandise, as well as food and drink vendors and 8-Bit Gaming Bar providing an epic after party.

Events Manager, Louise Dandy said: “GeekFest is designed out of the desire for the local community to have an event to express their hobbies and interests, in a friendly environment, without having to travel out of Cornwall. It is fantastic to see groups dressed in cosplay, making new friends, interacting with local geeky businesses and having fun.”
