As part of the national Volunteers Week campaign, Cornwall Hospice Care is celebrating the many who give their time to the Cornish charity.

Around 1,000 people volunteer in a wide range of roles at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices, in the shops, offices and at fundraising events.

The charity is celebrating the commitment of its volunteers by featuring a series of short films made with just some of those who donate their time. Also involved are the staff members who support them, all of whom reinforce the fact that the charity simply couldn’t achieve all it does without voluntary help.

Elaine, who volunteers in Cornwall Hospice Care’s lottery department at Holmbush in St Austell, said: “I wanted to give something back, making a small contribution to the wonderful work that the hospices do.”

Her manager is Sarah Vincent, who added: “Elaine does marvellous work for us in the lottery team. We couldn’t do what we do without her.”

Jane volunteers on the ward at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell. She said: “I have a nursing background so felt I would be able to come in to the hospice and offer help and support to the staff, patients and relatives. Volunteering makes me feel elated and I would urge anyone to try it.”

Lizzie Hotton, the ward sister, added: “Our ward volunteers undertake a variety of roles and bring a cheerful smile. We really value everything they do and would be lost without them.”

During this week Cornwall Hospice Care is also featuring short films with volunteers who fundraise, support the van drivers, help in one of the charity’s community shops and on the reception at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle.
