A week of celebrations kicks of today in Mawgan, with a programme of events that organisers hope will hold something for everyone.

Mawgan Feast Week is held each June to mark the founding of the village in the 13th century by St Maugan, a sixth-century Abbot-Bishop who travelled from Pembrokeshire to Mawgan Porth near Newquay (Mawgan-in-Pydar) and on to Mawgan Creek, near Helston, en route to Brittany.

This year’s fun begins tonight with the traditional thanksgiving service at the village war memorial, which will be led by Rev Lesley Walker from 6.30pm and include the laying of flowers on behalf of village organisers. This will be followed at 7pm by a free concert in the recreation hall by Gweek Band.

Tomorrow is also concert night, this time at Mawgan Church, when the Singing Seagulls will be joined by guest soloists Richard Collington on guitar and the village’s own Chloe Roberts, from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 on the door, to include a supper afterwards, with proceeds going to church funds.

Tuesday will see the return of the popular children’s tea and sports afternoon taking place after school from 3.30pm in the recreation hall and field. It is free for children of the parish, with a 50p charge for adults and visitors.

The following day is family quiz night at 7.30pm in the recreation hall, costing £2 a head with proceeds split between Mawgan Charge and MND, while on Thursday there will be free American square dancing there from 7.30pm, led by Wheel Around Wendron. No previous dance experience or a partner is necessary, with full instruction given; flat shoes are required.

The weekday activities will wrap up on Friday with bingo and light refreshments at 7.30pm, again in the hall.

Feast Saturday then marks the end of festivities in a grand way, on June 17. The day begins with a car boot sale in the recreation field from noon, with pitches costing £5 to rent, followed by the official opening led by the village’s new Cornwall councillor Julian Rand, with the help of pupils from Garras School.

There then follows an afternoon of activities for all the family, including a visit from shire horses and vintage vehicles, displays from the National Coastwatch Institution and the Royal British Legion, a bouncy castle, face painting, games including a raffle and ‘bowling-for-a-chicken,’ and a competition of Garras School pupil’s artwork. Refreshments include a tea and ice cream from Roskilly’s.
