Staff at Mylor Bridge School are thrilled after they were crowned overall winners in a recent competition, which saw them competing against schools from across the county.

The year six class at the school, led by assistant head Andrew Martin, competed in the annual Greenpower event, held at Newquay Airport, which saw the pupils make and race their own electric cars.

In total, the team from Mylor won six awards including greenest bodywork, as the shell of their car was made from crisp packets to highlight the fact that they cannot be recycled.

They also won the coveted ‘overall winner’ award, thanks to points they accrued in the drag, slalom, and sprint race categories, and achieved the second fastest slalom time out of 414 runs.

Andrew said: “There were 69 cars that raced and they were mainly from Cornwall, but there were some out of county cars that tour the competitions.

“It’s an annual event that we’ve been involved with for six years. We’re usually very successful but we’ve never had this many medals before.

“We had two cars to race this year, because we like to make sure everyone is involved.

“Some schools only take five or six drivers, but we take the whole class because we feel it’s a great team event.

“There’s so many parts to it, the portfolio, bodywork design, driving, pit crew, pushers. There’s something for everyone to do.

“We pick the drivers by practising in the playground. We encourage all of them to give it a go, most of them then get the bug but it’s not for everyone.

“The competition encompasses all elements of the curriculum, we have done science experiments to find out the speed, maths to find average times and English to write instructions.

“We had a few parents who came with us and helped us on the day, it felt amazing because it was done as a big team and everyone had that sense of achievement.

“As the day went on everything was going really well for us and we thought that we might have won, which we did.”

Andrew would like to thank his teaching assistant, Jane Fenton, and Alan Cottle for their help in organising the team, and their contribution to the event.
