A meeting is to be held on Thursday to discuss the future of the play area on The Beacon in Falmouth, which parents want to see redeveloped to create a safe and fun place for their children.

It was early last month that a group of parents got together to demand action be taken to repair and improve the park, which sits in a prime site opposite Falmouth Primary School and the Lighthouse Children's Centre, after it was vandalised on several occasions.

Equipment had been left unsafe and broken bottles and syringes littered the site, leaving parents concerned for their children's safety. They formed the action group, Sort Out Our Park (SOOP) and have set about instigating the transformation of the park, which is owned by Cornwall Housing.

Parents have already met with town councillors and officials from Cornwall Housing to discuss removing the old play equipment and replacing it with new gear and have asked other parents to put forward suggestions of what they would like to see installed. Some early ideas have included barbecue areas, seating and even a sculpture.

Through SOOP's Facebook page, mother-of-two Charlie Garratt said: "Please post up as many ideas as you can think of for our wish list for the park. Even if they seem like they're tricky or expensive. Even if they clash with other people's ideas. This is our park and we want it to work for everybody in the local community."

Cornwall Housing has come on board and is welcoming any help from the residents' group to improve the area. It is also willing to help explore possible grant funding opportunities that may be available.

The next stage in the parents' campaign is the public meeting being held at Falmouth Primary Academy at 3.30pm on Thursday when the future of the park will be discussed further. Anyone who wants to get involved, put forward ideas, or offer help, is invited to go along.
