A celebration of the Helston mayor's year in office was held on Sunday when she was joined by friends and local dignitaries.

The Mayor's Civic Sunday event saw Gillian Geer and her consort, husband Jonathan, welcome fellow mayors and parish council chairs, the town councillors and representatives of local organisations to the Guildhall for refreshments, before they paraded to the Central Methodist Church for a service.

The procession was led by Helston Town Band, followed by the mayor's mace bearers and then Mrs Geer herself.

At the church mayor's chaplain Rev Danny Reed, who is himself a member of the town council, led the service under the theme of "love."

It included a number of musical interludes, with Carrie Thresher reading from Corinthians 13 before singing Seasons of Love, from the musical Rent, joined by others from the Helston Theatre Group.

Steph Rosewarne sang I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady and Andy Christophers sang Bring Him Home from Les Miserables. Members of the Act One Junior Musical Group also sang three pieces and the town band performed two pieces. Mr Geer read Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18.

In his sermon, Rev. Danny spoke of the Grenfell Tower disaster in London and how much the Nottinghill Methodist Church were helping, but suggested that people should not just wait for such an event and he challenged each one of the congregation to do an Act of Random Kindness each week.

During the service the mayor presented three civic awards: a town shield to Ruth McGurk, the co-ordinator of the Helston and Lizard Foodbank, the citizen of the year award to Jenny Harvey who organises Helston's Poppy Appeal fundraising, and a young citizen's award to Francesca Legge, a cadet warrant officer with 3(Helston) Squadron Air Cadets. Francesca, who organises regular fundraising events for charities such as Help for Heroes and the RAF Benevolent fund, and is also instrumental in recruiting new members to the unit, was represented by her mum Nicki Hawkins at the presentation, as she is currently in America helping at school summer camps.

Mrs Geer said she was "very grateful" to all who made the day such a success.
