The Save Our Falmouth group and local residents are preparing to do battle again after hearing the developers behind plans for student accommodation on the site of the former Rosslyn Hotel have gone to appeal.

Studious Building (Falmouth) Ltd had applied for consent to create 117 student beds, along with a residents' lounge, fitness room, cinema and 18 parking spaces, on the site in Kimberley Park Road. Cornwall Council planning officer's however, refused permission under delegated powers in March.

The reason for refusals was that the site is not allocated for development and the scale of the proposed development is "so substantial, exacerbated by the lack of effective control on adjacent amenity" that it was considered the granting of permission would prejudice the community-led Neighbourhood Plan process.

The refusal document stated: "In this case, by reason of its location within the town of Falmouth, the proposal would be contrary to the council's strategy for providing a range of sites in and around the existing university campus at Penryn where students can both live and study in and around the same location."

It was revealed this week, however, that the company is appealing against that decision and anyone wishing to lodge any comments with the planning inspectorate has until August 9 to so do.

They can be made online at https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk or posted to the Planning Inspectorate, Nadia

Hussain, Room 3/M, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Bristol, BS1 6PN, quoting reference APP/D0840/W/17/3175637.

Reacting to the news of the appeal on Save Our Falmouth's Facebook page, Andrea McKenzie, said: "Flipping awful. I think once Cornwall say no then it should not go to flipping Bristol for an appeal. They have got nothing to do with Falmouth."

Chris Ayres said: "The Roslyn hotel has been there as long as I can remember, is it listed? It shouldn't be knocked down it's part of Falmouth's skyline building hideous student blocks is more of an insult to Falmouth's heritage and her people. If they need to redevelop make it internal flats for local people that live here all the time and pay council tax."

Jonathan Nelson said though: "Hotel is gone finished, the place is falling to bits been left to long now. Let it go."
