Helston Age Concern is celebrating after fundraising and grants allowed it to get a new minibus last week.

A group from the charity was at Hawkins Motors in Penryn to collect the bus on Thursday, after it was customised for them by the company's van centre in St Stephen.

Nick Martin, the chair of Helston Age Concern, said the charity started saving money 13 years ago after it was given its previous minibus by Helston Garages, as members were aware that without a steady income stream they would have trouble financing an eventual replacement.

In that time the charity has been putting aside money from bequests, fundraising and donations including from the Downsland Trust.

He said: "It's brilliant. It's been long awaited.

"The old one is starting to cost us money. We haven't got any regular income we can rely on, so we needed to be sure that we could get a new bus.

"It's been customised and built for us. Starting with a chassis and they put everything in. It's to our spec."
