The robots are coming to Falmouth - but only to mow tenants gardens and open green spaces.

Following reports last week that residents of Oakfield Road were unable to go outside as the grass had not been cut all summer, Cornwall Council contractor Cormac has now taken ownership of a new remote controlled grass cutter.

On Friday afternoon, a team from the company was out on Oakfield Road, mowing down grass that had been left untouched all year due to health and safety regulations. Cormac received the machine earlier in the week, and the team was trained up on Thursday before taking it out for use in the field.

A Cormac spokesperson said: "The grass is slippery as hell, there's a risk of going over and breaking a leg."

They added that new health and safety regulation introduced earlier in the year meant that workers could not work on a slope steeper than 20 degrees, while at places on Oakfield Road it was at 50 or 60 degrees.

From now on the council has said the banks at Oakfield Road should be mowed every four to five weeks during the summer, depending on the growth rate of the grass.

One resident, Dorita Avery, said she was "happy that they are doing it," adding: "It's a lot better."
