Fears that last month’s flooding might put a damper on Saturday’s Coverack Horticultural Show proved unfounded as the community turned out to support it more than ever before.

There were 500 exhibits on display in the Lambeage Hall and a steady throng of people arriving all afternoon to view them.

Those who had exhibited the best in each category or accumulated the most points in a section were awarded trophies, with photography, cookery and floral art all showing a high standard.

There had been concerns that the flash flooding in the village may have resulted in a lower standard of entry in the fruit, vegetable and flower sections but happily this was not the case and the usual well contested battle for the top prizes played out.

Seeing a particularly good year this year was village resident and parish councillor Bill Frisken, who not only walked away with trophies for most points in vegetables from a resident of the parish and overall, best exhibit in vegetables and most points in preserves, but also most points in show.

Another high flier this year was Di Peters, who also won five trophies, for most points in floral art, most points in the flower section, best exhibit in cookery, best exhibit in sweet peas and best exhibit in mixed garden flowers.

Best exhibit in the show was won by Michelle Combe, for her platinum wedding floral arrangement.

Show secretary Gloria Knight said: “I just wanted it to be so successful, because it was the show after the flood. Some people thought the show wouldn’t go ahead, because there would be nothing in their gardens, but everybody has just pulled together and made it an absolutely brilliant show.

“We’re up on exhibits for many years. It’s another case of the community pulling together and doing what they do best.”
