Customers at Falmouth's Wetherspoon's pub on The Moor could soon be dining alfresco if plans for a new roof terrace are approved.

The company has applied for permission to create an external seating and dining area on the flat roof of The Packet Station and to install a new lift to make the area accessible to all. The only way to access the terrace will be through the existing pub, where the existing staircase will be extended and replicated in appearance and dimensions.

The design and access statement accompanying the application says: "The area newly created would be wholly ancillary to the main use of the building as a public house. On the new terrace there will be no public address system, no live or piped music of any kind.

"Supervision of the area will be enhanced by use of an extended CCTV system. Hours of use will be as currently permitted for the existing public house. Any lighting will be at a low level of intensity, with sufficient fittings to ensure safe access and use in the event of an emergency. There will be no PIR lighting, or pole mounted flood lights."

The roof terrace would measure just under 260 sq m and would be entirely bounded by the existing enclosing parapet walls which would be topped with a frameless glass balustrade. Access to the terrace will involve the extension of the existing internal staircase to roof level and this will be enclosed within a lightweight glass sided, flat roofed enclosure.

"The additional terrace seating area will have little visual impact on the overall use of the site as a public house," adds the design statement. "The amenities of adjacent premises will not be affected by the proposals."
