For six decades she was the friendly face serving at one of Helston's most popular shops, but on Thursday it was Jane Kendall's turn to be waited on when she celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mrs Kendall was born in the village of Polladras, near Carleen, on August 24 ,1917.

Upon leaving school, she went to work in the toy shop of Eddy & Son in Meneage Street, Helston and this was where she remained until the age of 60 when she retired.

In 2014 she moved into Parc Vro Residential Home in Mawgan, where she has lived ever since.

For her milestone birthday, staff organised a party to remember. Thanks to a sunny afternoon, this took place outside in the home's garden, where Mrs Kendall was joined by family members - including her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and late husband's brother Billy Kendall - along with friends, staff and other residents.

She also received a special visit from the mayor of Helston, Gillian Geer, who presented Mrs Kendall with her congratulatory card from the Queen.

This was followed by a celebratory tea of pasties, cupcakes and a two-tier birthday cake decorated in lilac and white.

Home manager Abi Bidgood said: ""She was very overwhelmed but she thoroughly enjoyed it. She didn't expect it. She just wanted a quiet day so it was a surprise; we shut the curtains to the garden and then opened them when she came out."
