St Just residents will be able to have their say on plans for a new skate park and other improvements to be carried out at the town's recreation ground.

Cornwall Council is working on a scheme to carry out improvement works and is now asking residents to give their opinions, with a public meeting to be held on Wednesday, and plans to set up a locally based steering group.

Councillor Sue James, Cornwall Councillor for St Just in Penwith, has organised a public meeting at 6pm in the St Just Old Town Hall, to discuss the findings of a recent local consultation and to develop proposals for the space.

The improvements are an opportunity to breathe new life into the open space and improve the quality of activities for young people and other residents in the area.

Cornwall Council has made £30,000 available to upgrade the current facilities, which have reached the end of their natural life, and wants to give feedback after consulting with the community, and discuss how to take ideas for the open space forward.

Councillor James said: “I’m delighted with the volume of responses to the consultation. I now look forward to taking the conversation forward with local young people and residents who will use the park. This is an excellent opportunity for St Just residents to help shape the future of our local park so please come along and have your say.”

Officers from the council’s environment team are also hoping to work with enthusiastic residents to form a new community group to help steer and fundraise towards the improvements.

Stuart Wallace, Cornwall Council public space officer, said: “Due to the requirement for funding we expect the overall project to take several years. We will likely have to deliver it in a few stages, so are looking for positive and committed volunteers from all age groups in the local community to work together with us and the town council to update this important local asset.”

Funding for the project will be provided from a variety of grants and with designated funds from Cornwall Council’s Capital Play Programme.
