Falmouth University’s School of Writing and Journalism has launched its first book in collaboration with the National Trust and the university’s current writer in residence, Wyl Menmuir.

In Dark Places is the first in a series of pocket-size books inspired by the history and environment of National Trust places. It has been written by Wyl, illustrated by MA illustration student Emma Butcher, and produced by a team of English and writing students.

Niamh Downing, head of English and writing at Falmouth, said: “The publishing team worked with Katie Bond, head of publishing at National Trust, to bring this book to market. It’s provided an exceptional opportunity for students to gain experience of all aspects of the publishing process, and to showcase their talent as creative producers."

The student publishing team was led by Samantha Pentin, Benjamin G Wilson and Kate Williams. It comprised of Adriana Ciontea, Joanna Varandas, Alyanna Graham, Janina Zender, Anthony Sprouse, Holly Farr and Day Lilico.

In Dark Places is a "darkly atmospheric" story about a young couple on their honeymoon set to explore Cheddar Gorge, only to find themselves increasingly distanced from one another as the presence of the claustrophobic caves closes in around them.
