It may only be a few weeks into the new term, but Penryn College’s pupils have already been making waves in the sporting world.

The rugby term has proved as popular as ever attracting record numbers at training sessions, with over 110 students having already represented the various school teams. The year nine team have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the term, having already beaten Penrice, Pool and Redruth, while a B team also tasted victory at Truro School. All year groups also enjoyed a showcase fixture against Penrice.

It has also been a busy start on the football front, with all the boys and girls teams taking part in National Cup fixtures. The year 11s start their campaign against Falmouth School this week and have high hopes of replicating the record breaking seventh round run achieved by last year’s year 11 side.

The school is proud that such a large number of pupils have already been selected for the prestigious West Cornwall Schools football squads: Olly Pickup, Jack Symons, Jasper Turner, Ross Dunstan (U13s); Kayden Gordon-Dunn (U14s), Sam Walker, Ed Mitchell, Joe Richards, Max Everall and Jonah Bough (U15s).

There has been a staggering turn out in all of the after schools sessions with nearly 80 girls attending hockey training and 120 girls coming along to netball training. This insatiable appetite has been evident in the first results of the season, with all years beating Mullion.

In the same week the U14 and U16 teams then travelled to Exeter to play against Maynard Independent Girls School and St Peter’s School. The girls showed they can compete with two of the strongest sporting schools in the South West, with both age groups beating Maynard’s and narrowly losing out in two close games against St Peter’s.

The U13s, U14s and U15s had wins against Falmouth School, with year sevens narrowly losing by 8-6, for most, in their first experience of the seven-a-side game.

The school's Penryn Saracens basketball squad, who take part in the National Basketball League, have enjoyed a good start to their season having travelled to Dorset Storm and beating them 84-51. The boys also put in a great performance in their next match against Dorset Jurassic Coasters, just losing out in the final quarter, having led at half time against a really strong Coasters side.

There has also been good attendance at the other after-school clubs, with badminton, cheerleading, girls active, table tennis, cross country and gymnastics all proving as popular as ever.

"All of these clubs are working towards competitions coming up over the next few months, and with their commitment to training, there is no doubt that they will continue to achieve through the challenge that sport provides," said Dave Cunningham, director of business.
