Moonlight memory walkers look set to raise £20,000

The fundraiser had been postponed the week before because of the weather but this weekend the ladies-only sponsored walk went ahead despite the wet conditions. Between them, the walkers have pledged to raise £20,000 in sponsorship.

Ladies gathered on The Moor ahead of the walk and were entertained by Pirate FM’s breakfast show host Neil Caddy. Bags decorated with memories of loved ones were lit with a candle and placed around the fountain creating a beautiful centrepiece and reminder for everyone of the reasons for taking part.

A memory ceremony took place before the walk with words from the CHSW team including a reading from Nikki Isbell, a senior team leader from CHSW’s St Austell children’s hospice Little Harbour, and a rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water recorded by the CHSW choir.

Following a warm up by Tara Hegarty from Versatile Fitness Choice the ladies set off at 10pm to walk the five miles around Falmouth covering Pendennis Point, Gyllyngvase Beach and Kimberly Park.

Representatives were there on the evening from the two businesses sponsoring the event: Fugro Geo Services and Goodmans Financial Planning. Sponsorship by those companies helps to cover costs meaning that more of the sponsorship raised by the ladies taking part can go straight towards the care and support offered by the charity to the children and families it supports.

Volunteers from the Martin Jennings Marshals Association also stepped in on Saturday to help with the event after organisers fell short of marshals.

Kiley Pearce, events fundraiser for CHSW, said: “On behalf of the team at Little Harbour I would like to thank everyone who walked the five miles around Falmouth on Saturday evening. It is always really special to see so many women walking in memory of their loved ones whilst also supporting our special cause by raising such a fantastic amount of money.

"Thanks also go to all of the volunteers and marshals who helped us to make the evening run smoothly, without the help of everyone around the route and on the Moor the event simply wouldn’t be able to happen.

"Thanks are also extended to Fugro GeoServices, Goodmans Financial Planning, Pirate FM, The Packet, Tara from Versatile Fitness Choice, Flanaghan’s Food Bar, Fal Fire, St Michaels Hotel and Spa, Right Response Training and Falmouth Town Council.”

CHSW announced on the evening that the next Moonlight Memory Walk, which will be the tenth anniversary walk, will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019.

The charity is now encouraging ladies who took part to send their sponsorship money in. Anyone who raises over £100 in sponsorship will be entered into a prize draw to win a family pass for St Michael’s Hotel and Spa where they will be able to use the swimming pool and spa facilities for a day.

The money raised will go towards the care and support offered to local children with life limiting and life threatening illnesses and their families through Little Harbour which provides short breaks, respite, palliative care as well as end of life care and bereavement support and helps the whole family to make precious memories to treasure.
