Five weeks of disruption will begin in Helston in just over a week's time as an £11,000 programme of gas pipe replacements gets underway.

The work will centre on Godolphin Road, with Wales & West Utilities saying the investment will make sure homes and businesses “continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.”

It is due to begin on Monday, November 6, as part of a multi-million pound, 30-year gas pipe replacement programme that began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being upgraded to new long-lasting plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years.

To allow the work to take place, Cornwall Council has agreed that a one-way system will be put in place along the entire road, including the stretch that is usually two-way.

This will affect bus routes and Wales & West has been working with bus operators to make sure they know what to expect.

Programme controller for the area Jim Lee said: “Our work in Godolphin Road is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We have worked closely with Cornwall Council to plan the best way to complete our work while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“Working in areas like this is never easy but we will work as safely and as quickly as possible to make sure that we get the job done with minimal disruption for local people.”
