A donation from a group of anglers has tipped the amount given to Falmouth RNLI's appeal over the £90,000 mark, meaning there is now less than £10,000 to find to hit their target.

A cheque for £1,400 was presented to Paul Wickes, deputy chair of the Falmouth RNLI appeal committee, by Camborne Angling Association at their headquarters at the Holman Sports Club in Camborne.

The association is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and as the anglers feel strongly about the importance of the RNLI, they wanted to do something special and collect money to support the charity, particularly as a number of them have been grateful to receive help from RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews in the past years.

The money donated by the association came from the proceeds of their anniversary open shore fishing competition held last month.

Paul Wickes said: "I would like to thank the Camborne Angling Association members for raising this incredible sum of £1,400 in their very special 70th anniversary celebration year for the Falmouth RNLI Appeal. I know from experience with the appeal that £1,400 is a very significant amount to raise through one event and appreciate all the planning and voluntary time that went into ensuring the event was such an amazing success.

"This major contribution to the Falmouth RNLI appeal now puts the total raised at over £90,000 so we are getting very close to our appeal target thanks to the generosity of the anglers."

The RNLI appeal was launched in the spring with the aim of raising £100,000 to put towards the cost of alterations and improvements that are needed at the lifeboat station ahead of the arrival of a new and bigger Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat.

It has been hoped the target would be reached within the year as 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Falmouth lifeboat station - it is now looking increasingly like that will be achieved thanks to the fundraising efforts of the local community.
