A veteran from Falmouth is nominated for the Henry Worsley Award at this week's Endeavour Fund Awards, recognising how he has helped other wounded, injured and sick veterans to discover their sense of value and belonging through sailing.

Dan Fielding will attend the awards ceremony in London on Thursday (February 1) where he will be joined by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who will be meeting the nominees as well as other endeavour participants and supporters of the Endeavour Fund.

The Endeavour Fund Awards are held annually to celebrate the achievements of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women who have taken part in remarkable sporting and adventure challenges to help with their recovery and rehabilitation.

The Henry Worsley Award award is presented to an individual who has best inspired others through the demonstration of determination in the face of adversity whilst endeavouring to support others with their recovery through success in sport or adventurous challenge.

Dan was medically discharged from the Royal Marines with a back injury in 2008, which left him with a real sense of despair. In 2015, he was introduced to sailing charity Turn to Starboard and immediately fell in love with sailing, finding the effects of being at sea beneficial to his mental health.

He received his RYA Yacht master certificate and proved himself as first mate during a 2,000 mile voyage around the British Isles in 2016. He repeated the voyage in 2017 but this time as captain, charged with the leadership, safety and welfare of a crew of 17 other veterans.

Dan said: "Not only has the crew faced their own challenges after service life, they have faced incredible challenges throughout this journey. From appalling weather conditions to damaged sails and broken steering gear, the team has shown resilience in every situation and should be justly proud of their incredible achievement."
