A yellow weather warning for snow across Cornwall tomorrow has led to the cancellation of the Run Falmouth Half Marathon and Kids Run.

Organisers have announced in the last half an hour that the event, which had been due to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care, will no longer be taking place on health and safety grounds.

It is not known at this point whether a new date will be set.

Oliver Hoare, head of fundraising for the charity, said this morning: “Over the last 24 hours, we have been monitoring the weather forecast closely in preparation for tomorrow’s Run Falmouth Half Marathon and Kids Run. Our hope was that the forecast would change and be more favourable to the events planned.

“However, with worsening conditions, a yellow weather warning for Falmouth and all of Cornwall, forecast heavy snow during the events, existing standing water on the course and sub-zero temperatures, we have decided to cancel tomorrow’s Run Falmouth 2018 and the Kids Run.

“We must put the safety of our diverse field of runners and our marshals, spectators and all other associated staff and volunteers, first. They are our priority and it is in the interest of ensuring the safety of everyone involved that we have made this very difficult decision.

“We do not yet know if we will be able to rearrange another date for the events to take place.”

Mr Hoare said the team appreciated how disappointing this news would be, adding that when the fundraising team was back in the office on Monday they would be in touch with all runners.

“Thank you in advance to all involved in understanding this very difficult decision we have had to make,” he said.
