Vehicles travelling on the A30 tonight have been warned they're spending the night there as snow continues to cause traffic chaos in some parts of the county and just over the border.

Police have closed the A30 to heavy goods vehicles and campervans at Okehampton, telling drivers to settle in for the night.

Jon Aldred, from Helston, is one of the motorists stuck for the night. He said: "We are here at least until they get a plow through, but then they've got to move a lorry before we can get out.

"We are lucky, there are a couple of cars stuck - one had a women and a little kid in. A Tesco lorry driver was amazing, he offered them his cab, all nice and warm he's been a real hero."

Although the roads in west Cornwall remain largely clear for driving at present, further up the county it has caused more problems and police are warning motorists all over Cornwall and Devon to not travel unless absolutely necessary.

A Met Office amber warning remains in place, with freezing conditions and further snowfall expected in the region into tomorrow. Police have been working with councils and other partners all weekend to keep people safe and main routes open.

A spokesperson said this evening: "Areas of Devon and Cornwall have seen significant snowfall causing challenging conditions and some disruption on the road network, with a number of collisions and abandoned vehicles causing further problems.

"The multi-agency operation to keep roads as clear as possible via gritting and ploughing continues.

"Temperatures will remain low on Monday and driving conditions remain treacherous in places due to ice and snow."

Police are urging drivers to heed the weather warnings and the advice not to travel this evening or Monday morning unless absolutely necessary. If you do need to drive, ensure you plan ahead, take extra care and allow more time for your journey.

The spokesman added: “We are concerned about rush hour traffic tomorrow and would advise the public to drive to the conditions of the road, slow down, keep your distance, and keep an eye on weather reports before you set off.

“If you have to travel, carry additional warm clothing/footwear, food, drink, a charged mobile phone, and ensure your vehicle has a full tank of fuel.”
