This year’s An Res Hellys race saw runners from all over Cornwall descend on Helston on Sunday.

The ten-mile multi-terrain race was the fifth event of the Cornwall Grand Prix Series and enjoyed brilliant sunshine.

Runners assembled at the Old Cattle Market ahead of the race start at 10.30am, with 382 competitors crossing the finish line.

They then followed a circular route through Penrose to Gunwalloe and back up along Culdrose to return to Coronation Park.

The first three runners back were also the first men back, all from the under 35 category - although there was only seconds between first and second place.

Squeezing the win was Jordan Clay, of Cornwall Athletics Club, who completed the course in well under an hour in a time of 0:55:05.

He just pipped Joseph Wade, of Aldershot Farnham & District, into second place, who completed in a time of 0:55:29.

Jordan Morant of Hayle Runners took third place, in 0:58:33.

First woman back was Emma Stepto of Cornwall AC, with a time of 1:02:38. She was also first female veteran in the 45 to 49 category and 16th overall.

Second woman was Heidi Tregenza of Cornwall AC in 1:03:45 and third was Emma Paull of Hayle Runners in 1:04:15, with both running in the under 35 category.

In the men's veterans, first in the 35 to 39 age group was Dan Alsop of St Austell Running Club in 0:59:37, fifth overall, while for the 40 to 44 category Paul Smith of Cornwall AC finished in 0:58:58 and was fourth overall.

Jonny Colaco of Newquay Road Runners was first man aged 45 to 49, finishing ninth overall with a time of 1:00:28, while Paul Whear of Cornwall AC came seventh overall and was top in the 50 to 54 age group, returning in 0:59:48. Steve Baker of Tamar Trotters took the male 60 to 64 win in 1:08:13 and was 37th overall.

In the remaining women's veterans, Becky Morgan of Truro Running Club came top in the 35 to 39 group in 1:15:59 and 78th overall, Julia Pearce of Cornwall AC took the 40 to 44 group win in 1:16:53 making her 88th overall and Tracey Nicholls of Mounts Bay Harriers Female returned first in the 55 to 59 category, coming 149th overall in 1:25:29. Diane Warren of Hayle Runners took the 60 to 64 crown, in 1:27:54 and 174th overall.

The race was organised by Carn Runners and Tri-Logic, who were supported once again by At Your Pace running shop in Helston and French running shoe company Hoka One One.

It was the first Grand Prix race in four weeks for the runners, following the cancellation of the Falmouth Half the previous week due to snow. It has yet to be announced if there will be a rescheduled date.
