FOLLOWING the damage and theft of swan's eggs at Swanpool Lake yesterday, police have responded to social media rumours as to who or what was responsible.

It is unclear as to whether people or indeed animals invaded the site at the beauty spot, but speculation that human footprints were seen in the nesting area has brought this reponse from Falmouth police:

"We'd like to address the reports of footprints in the mud leading to the nesting site as rumours on social media are saying that this is 'obvious' evidence that humans are to blame.

"Officers have spoken with members of the public who have confirmed that since the discovery of the eggs being missing/damaged that they have walked to the nesting sight to check on the welfare of the swans.

"We thank those individuals for being so concerned about a protected species, however in doing so they have trampled over any other footprints/evidence that may or may not have been there.

"As a result we have a well trodden path walked over by an unknown amount of people. We hope this clears up the rumours."
