A YEOVIL man facing allegations of assault, drug driving and theft at Yeovil and Chard has had the case against him adjourned for matters to be reviewed before he can enter his pleas.

Darren John Berry, 46, of Fairway View, was brought before Somerset Magistrates in custody after being arrested by police on a warrant after he failed to turn up for a previous court hearing.

He faces charges that on November 3 last year at Yeovil he took a vehicle without the owner’s consent and damage was caused to it and also that he assaulted Carl Shepherd.

He is also alleged on the same date to have driven the vehicle on Boundary Way when the proportion of a controlled drug, namely Benzoylecgonine in his blood exceeded the specified limit.

The defendant was also charged with a shoplifting offence at Chard where he was said to have stolen a pair of hair straighteners valued at £45 from Superdrug in Fore Street.

Prosecutor Stuart Sampson said that having read the papers in the case he required an adjournment for certain matters to be confirmed before progress could be made.

Sam Morton, defending, said that he needed more time to go through the file with his client as he was suffering from a form of dementia and required the assistance of a carer.

The magistrates adjourned all matters until April 26 and Berry must enter his pleas and I the meantime he was released on unconditional bail.
