MAWNAN Football Club celebrated the conclusion of another very successful season when they held their presentation evening at the Cove Restaurant in Falmouth on Friday.

Almost 80 guests attended the event to see who had scooped the club’s major prizes, but perhaps the most poignant presentation was made to Mrs Clair Day, the widow of popular player Martin Day who died earlier this year.

Clair was presented with a league championship winner’s medal that was generously donated by Scott Kellow in memory of Martin.

Chairman Colin Bate said that the club’s adopted charity, MIND, was even more relevant to everyone this year given the circumstances that it found itself in and would be making a very generous donation to the charity.

Mr Bate congratulated the players and managers, Mark Trewin and Ian Grant, on another excellent season that culminated in winning the premier division championship. He also praised manager Ben Roberts and the reserve team for performing so well after being promoted to division one.

He thanked all the workers who did so much behind the scenes. “Without people attending to all the administration needs, running the bar, marking and rolling the pitch, cooking the after-match food and so on, it would be difficult for the club to function,” said Mr Bate.

The Ron Sara cup for the Ist XI player of the year was Greg Hobbs and the Stan Jackson cup for the 2nd XI player of the year went to Liam Dent. Joe Nancarrow won the W C Rowe young player of the year award and the Dickie Robertson cup for the most consistent player of the year was Ryan James.

The Ist XI managers’ player of the year was Dan Buckingham and the top goalscorer was Adam Keenan. The 2nd XI manager’s player of the year was Simon Spear with Liam Dent being top goalscorer.

The John Christophers clubman of the year cup went to Tim Pointon who proved a very popular winner and received a rousing reception.
