Two students from Falmouth University, both of whom are studying for a BA in Graphic Design, have been included in the shortlists for the 2018 Penguin Random House Student Design Award.

Lucy Scholes has been shortlisted for her cover of Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman for the Children’s Cover category, whilst Joshua Payne has been shortlisted for his redesign of Animal Farm by George Orwell in the Fiction Cover category.

Lucy Scholes said: “I had never created a book cover with the thought of it being on shop shelves in mind. I think this is a brilliant opportunity and gives students an insight into creating covers for such a range of books. It is also interesting how differently everyone responds to the same brief.”

Joshua Payne said: “I think the awards give students a chance to show not only their skill, but who they are.

“My dream job would be to work in a graphic design studio where I could practice across a range of mediums, for a wide variety of design areas. I really want the opportunity to explore everything within design and choose a specialism from this experience.”

Every year, students from across the country enter the award as an opportunity to build their portfolio and experience a real cover design brief first-hand.

Both Lucy and Joshua’s striking re-designs of Noughts & Crosses (Children’s Cover category) and Animal Farm (Fiction Cover category) respectively ensured they were chosen from over 2,100 submissions.

Both will now go up against nine other student designers in their respective categories. Art Directors from Penguin Random House have provided each of the shortlisted designers with detailed feedback on their covers, giving the students the opportunity to refine their designs before the final judging takes place.

The winners in each of the three categories (Adult Fiction, Adult Non-Fiction and Children’s) will receive a work placement within the Penguin Random House UK design studios, as well as a £1,000 cash prize.

The judging panel is made up of Art Directors from across Penguin Random House UK as well as guest judges from the design and publishing industry, including Malorie Blackman, Anthony Burrill, Grace Winteringham, Orlando Weeks, Indi Davies and Tom Sanderson.
