A FIRST look has been revealed at how Cornwall's council divisions could be split from 2021.

It involves reducing the number of Cornwall councillors from the current 123 down to 87 and merging a number of existing councillor divisions.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has now launched a 15-week public consultation, giving people a say on the proposed changes.

In the Falmouth area, the town would lose its Smithick ward, which would be shared between Falmouth Penwerris and Falmouth Arwenack. Budock would join with Falmouth Trescobeas, to create a much larger division that would stretch as far as Lamanva and Treverva. Falmouth Boslowick would remain as a division and remain largely unchanged, apart from to include Mongleath Road also.

Penryn would become one division on its own - therefore having only one councillor rather than two - separating from Mylor, which would go to join Perranarworthal and St Gluvias.

Mabe would move over to join with Constantine and Mawnan.

In the Helston area, the town would be divided into Helston North as a division on its own, with a new Helston South and Meneage division being created to include as far out as Mawgan, St Martin and Manaccan.

Porthleven would be separated from Helston, to combine with Breage and Germoe

One of the biggest divisions in the county, geographically, would be the new Mullion and St Keverne division, which would be covered by just one councillor rather than the existing two.

The full recommendations and detailed interactive maps are available on the commission’s website at consultation.lgbce.org.uk and lgbce.org.uk. Hard copies of the commission’s report and maps will also be available to view at council buildings.

The consultation will end on September 17.
