AN "unknown object" has washed up on a busy Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth today.

Coastguards were called to the beach around lunchtime having received reports of the unidentified item.

They liaised with RNLI Lifeguards, who had reported it, to establish what the object was.

Pictures where taken and sent to EODU (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit) for examination and confirmation that the object was not explosive.

EODU confirmed that is was safe, at which point the coastguards were stood down at 1pm.

Anyone who spots an "unknown" or suspicious object on the coast should dial 999 and ask for coastguard.

We'll attend and will liaise directly with explosive experts or relevant local authorities or organise the correct or most appropriate disposal.
