Mrs C has embarked upon what she calls her "pre-holiday diet".

Which basically means no carbs, no cocktails, no fizz and no fun.

In fact life at home has become extremely dull of late, apart from the odd buzz from the bee hotel - and some late-night caterwauling courtesy of the cat.

As she is only eating miniature meals I thought it appropriate I take her to a tapas bar for lunch.

Moreover, I was in desperate need of some foodie fun.

In its purest form, tapas is one of the greatest food inventions in history: a drink and a bite here, a tipple and a morsel there – the tapas revolution continues to take Britain by storm and Falmouth is lucky enough to have a new tapas bar on the block in the shape of Lemon Twist, which recently opened on Discovery Quay.

This place I love, simply because it does tapas and small plates, and does it exceptionally well.

We ordered a selection of dishes including crab claws served in their shell with aioli – which Mrs C claimed was "the freshest crab I’ve ever eaten".

I ordered Spanish meat balls which were stunning, plus pan fried prawns in seaweed salt, and a mackerel pate from the specials board.

This is tapas with a twist and the portions were just right. I enjoyed a glass or two of a really lovely Italian Rosé while Mrs C made do with what appeared to be a very grumpy glass of ginger beer.

There are also some lovely salads on the menu too, including Cornish smoked duck with feta; and crayfish tails with avocado. The drinks menu is also fun and inventive, though I’m not entirely sure what Sweet Potato Spirits over ice may be – but I’m determined to find out next time I’m there.

Lemon Twist may not be your typical tapas bar in a Barcelona sense, but this place is something very special and offers diners on Discovery Quay a much needed alternative to pizza – so I really wish the owners huge success.

After coffee and a sumptuous slice of lemon polenta cake, Mrs C sat looking out across the square. I watched as she tapped her fingers anxiously on the table, then suddenly she glanced up and caught the waiter’s eye.

“Can I see the cocktail menu, please?” She demanded.

She looked up at me and smiled impishly. Some things never change.
