Building work has started to extend the size of the Asda store in Penryn’s online shopping department.

On Monday (June 18), work began and a section of the car park around the front of the store (nearest Kernick Road) was barricaded.

The extension will provide additional fridge, freezer and ambient temperature space to store items that are ordered online before they are loaded into delivery vans.

It will also move the click and collect drive through area to the front of the building from its current location on the right hand side, which means that customers will not have to enter the store if they order their groceries online and choose to pick them up rather than have them delivered.

A spokesperson from Asda confirmed that the building work is likely to be finished by August 13 of this year.

The Packet recently reported that a free bus service for elderly people had been cancelled by the supermarket due to lack of funds, but the Asda spokesperson claimed that the new extension was not related in any way to the cancellation of the bus service.

Plans to build the extension were approved by Cornwall Council on May 24, just over three weeks before work began.
