A FUNDRAISING page has been launched to help replace Helston's ageing skatepark that "will not survive another winter."

As reported last week, plans have gone in to Cornwall Council for new facilities at Coronation Park, where the existing skate ramps have been since 2007 - although they were second hand when installed and are of "indeterminate age."

New park leaseholders, the South Kerrier Alliance, have £300,000 to spend on improvements there, including new lighting, a cyclepath and repairs to the lake walls, although a major part is the well-used skatepark.

Now Dave Bateman and his partner Clare, whose children are among the many regular users of the equipment, hope to raise £1,000 of a £6,000 shortfall in funding.

Clare has arranged a bag-packing event at Helston Sainsbury's on July 21, where Helston Furry Youth Cafe members will support the cause, and a community fundraising event will be held at the park on August 12 featuring competitions, music, raffles and skating demonstrations, with involvement from Mount Hawke skatepark and Urban Gypset in Helston.

Dave said: "This event will hopefully be a perfect opportunity to reveal the proposed plans of the new skate park and to gain valuable opinions and suggestions from people who use the skatepark.

"My children regularly use the skate park, especially my son who is an avid talented skater - he would be devastated if this important social hub for children in Helston was to close."

An online fundraising page has been set up justgiving.com/crowdfunding/revamp-the-ramps for donations.
